Nature Basket

Standing forests, peat and mangroves

Protection and restoration of tropical peat swamp, mangrove, Amazonian and temperate forest, weighted towards the highest-rated large-scale projects.

Nature buys the ecosystems that are already storing carbon and are at credible risk of being cleared. The weight sits with Katingan Mentaya, a peat-swamp project independently AA-rated by both BeZero and Sylvera, and Delta Blue Carbon, the largest blue carbon project in the world. Alongside them sit an Amazonian avoided-deforestation project, an Alaskan improved forest management project and a Ugandan smallholder tree-planting programme. Avoided-deforestation baselines have drawn well-documented third-party scrutiny across the market, so the basket is deliberately diversified across four methodologies and five countries rather than concentrated in REDD+.

Latin America, BrazilREDD+ Avoided DeforestationVintage 2019-2021VM0007

An avoided planned deforestation project in Acre where a large landowner forgoes conversion of tropical forest to cattle ranching, with a 30-year crediting period running from August 2012.
